Day in the life

6:00am: By the time you finally venture out of your room for a shower, all of the family that will leave has already left for the day. Your host mom is busy cleaning the floors. You make your way to the shower and make sure the widow-maker is on, being careful not to touch the wires or the metal pipes, so that you’ll get some hot water. After your shower, it is time for breakfast. Breakfast: Gallo Pinto (a mixture of rice and seasoned black beans)
7:30am – 8:00am: You walk to the office.
8:00am – 8:30am: You sit down with the staff and other interns to begin the work day with prayer and/or praise. You think again about how wonderful it is to pray and worship at work with the people you work with. 8:30am – noon: You work in the office picking up red-lines, communicating with the volunteers from your project trip as you try to complete your project before your internship is over.
Lunch: Sandwiches in the office or out on the town to expand your repertoire of Costa Rican casados 1:00pm-5:00pm: It is time for more AutoCAD, more emails, and more of the same. It is getting old, but then you realize that what you are designing is going to be used to spread the Gospel. “What a great way to learn my profession,” you think. 5:00pm – 6:00pm: You decide to stay after in the office to chat with friends and keep up with family. 6:00pm – 6:30pm: You enjoy your walk home (as long as it isn’t raining).
Dinner: Rice, beans, maybe some chicken
9:00pm: By now, you’re feeling worn-out from trying to speak and understand Spanish. Your host family always has something to talk about and they usually want your opinion on the matter. Dinner was good, but you’re tired. It is time for bed. You look at the time and say to yourself, “I never would have gone to bed at 9:00pm at home.” But you never would have woken up at 5:00am either…
